Held on International Translation Day, this panel explores the challenges of translating contemporary poetry, drawing inspiration from Paul Celan and the story of how Pierre Joris came to translate Celan’s work. Panelists reflect on their own translation practices in conversation with this legacy, drawing on different techniques, styles, and languages.
The panel will be preceded by a presentation by Nicole Peyrafitte on Pierre Joris and his journey translating Paul Celan, and it’ll be followed by a conversation with translators Susan Bernofsky, Emma Ramadan, and Mónica de la Torre.
