SUMMARY:Day of Translation
DESCRIPTION:Day of Translation panel: Interspecies Translation \nWhat is gained in narrating from the perspective of a polar bear\, a clam\, or famously\, a cockroach? This panel explores the idea of “interspecies translation” and how the languages of the animal\, aquatic\, and otherwise natural world inform the way we approach narrative and storytelling. Is it more freeing to be a clam than a woman? What happens to a polar bear’s voice when it’s translated both across species and across languages? Will we ever be able to understand animal language? Will they ever understand ours? \nJoin Susan Bernofsky (translator of Yoko Tawada’s Memoirs of a Polar Bear\, New Directions)\, Bonnie Chau (All Roads Lead to Blood\, 2040 Books)\, Anelise Chen (Clam Down\, One World)\, and Kate Zambreno (Animal Stories\, forthcoming from Transit Books) in a conversation about what translation can teach us about understanding the animal world and vice versa. Moderated by Dr. Elisha Cohn (Milieu: A Creaturely Theory of the Contemporary Novel\, Stanford University Press).

SUMMARY:Old Words\, New Words: Translating Classic and Contemporary Literature
DESCRIPTION:While contemporary fiction is generally translated in a contemporary mode\, things can quickly get complicated when a translator approaches an older literary work. Suddenly there are choices to be made on how to communicate the age and style of the work– lots of choices! And it turns out that some of the factors we take into account when translating older works can also be helpful in approaching contemporary literature. Acclaimed translator Susan Bernofsky will speak about her favorite techniques for retranslating classic older works – like Hermann Hesse’s Siddhartha\, Franz Kafka’s The Metamorphosis\, and Thomas Mann’s The Magic Mountain – and how to apply them to contemporary translation projects.

SUMMARY:Places and Traces: The Translation Archive
DESCRIPTION:Panel\, American Literary Translators Association Conference \nLiterary translation is a profession that is relatively portable. And yet\, translation also leaves its trace. Translators’ papers\, or their hard drives\, can be a treasure for those interested in exploring the work of their predecessors. Often these doc- uments are incidental to the archive of a writer or scholar who also happened to translate. Archives can also be the result of diligent work by scholars or librarians. Participants will explore ways translators can interact with translation archives. This will include the use of archives for socio-cul- tural and biographical ends; pedagogical possibilities; their role in practical and scholarly research; and views on how such archives are established\, curated\, and maintained. \nModerator: Chris Clarke\nPanelists: Esther Allen\, Susan Bernofsky\, Daniel Hahn\, Mara Faye Lethem

SUMMARY:Abschlussveranstaltung\, Translation als Geheimnis / Secret Übersetzung
DESCRIPTION:Translation als Geheimnis / Secret Übersetzung \nÖffentliche Abschlussveranstaltung im Rahmen der August-Wilhelm-von-Schlegel-Gastprofessur mit Susan Bernofsky und Studierenden der FU Berlin \nÜbersetzung ist der heimliche Kern jedes Schreibens\, jedes Sprechens. Eintritt frei.

SUMMARY:Mozart's The Magic Flute
DESCRIPTION:A feminist revisioning of Mozart’s The Magic Flute\, directed by Keturah Stickann with a new English libretto translation by Susan Bernofsky. Livestream tickets available. \nPamina is stuck in a violent riff between her mother and father\, who both think they should raise her alone. When she is kidnapped by her father\, her mother (who also happens to be the powerful Queen of the Night) enlists the help of young Prince Tamino and her hapless birdcatcher\, Papageno\, to bring her daughter back. Part fantasy adventure tale\, part family drama\, Mozart’s infectious music\, and a witty new libretto translation by Susan Bernofsky will evoke raucous laughter and endless tears in this classic opera that reminds us we are all worthy of love.
